Hundreds have complained about Ferne McCann eating a live spider on I'm A Celeb

British broadcasting watchdog Ofcom received hundreds of complaints about the challenge, which viewers have branded “animal cruelty”.

The former The Only Way Is Essex star was tasked with eating a live water spider whole during one of the show’s infamous Bushtucker Trials – she managed it, but according to The Guardian, viewers were not impressed.

British broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has confirmed it received 553 complaints about the challenge, reflecting the chatter on Twitter, which was mostly negative.

Viewers at home accused I’m A Celebrity of “animal cruelty” and PETA has agreed, saying the show has “a complete disregard for sentient life”.

But a spokesperson for ITV told BBC Newsbeat:

I’m A Celebrity complies with all regional and national laws concerning the use of insects in the eating trials, which have become a well-established part of the show over the past 15 years.

Despite her ordeal, McCann was beaten to the title of Queen of the Jungle by fellow reality TV star Vicky Pattison. Was it worth it, then? Well, yes, according to McCann’s post-trial tweets:
